The Naples Pier is #3 on the Complete Florida Fishing list of the Five Best Florida Fishing Spots (That You’ve Never Fished!).
Naples is usually overlooked for its fishing due to the glamorous lifestyle it has adapted. However, beyond the exquisite real estate, high end sports cars, and mega yachts, there is a fishing culture that dates back to the 19th century. The backbone of this fishing culture is without a doubt the Naples Pier.
The Naples Pier has not always been one of the Best Florida Fishing Spots. Originally constructed in 1888, the Naples Pier was used as a freight and passenger dock. The Naples Pier was re-constructed 3 times after being destroyed by hurricanes in 1920, 1926, and 1960. Today, the Naples Pier has become the iconic symbol of Naples and one the Best Florida Fishing Spots.
You can find the Naples Pier jutting 1,000 feet into the Florida Gulf just off 12th Avenue South. Right in the heart of Old Naples. The Naples Pier provides two fish cleaning stations, drop nets, restrooms, and a snack shack that sells live shrimp and basic tackle. Best of all, the City of Naples has purchased a bulk fishing license for the Pier, which means you don’t need one! That’s right, you can fish the Naples Pier without a fishing license (you must still abide by all state seasonal bag limits and size regulations).
The Naples Pier can host numerous species of fish including Snook, Trout, Sheepshead, and Spanish Mackerel. Even an occasional Cobia can be found lurking in these waters. Be aware though, there is a current ban on shark fishing from the Naples Pier.
Try using a 7 foot medium action rod with a 20 – 30lb line (Braid or Mono). The main bait of choice is live shrimp; however, live pinfish, sardines, or even chunk bait may land you that Snook of a life time! Whether you choose a conventional or spinning set up, be prepared for the unknown as you never know what you might reel in off the Naples Pier.
Recently the City of Naples voted to impose new fishing rules on the Naples Pier to protect the pelicans which have made the Naples Pier their home. The new rules include:
- Feeding birds is prohibited. (This includes fish scraps)
- Hook size maximum is 5/0.
- Landed fish must be kept in a container (Fish cannot be exposed on the Naples Pier)
- Cannot dispose of fish carcasses into the water (Carcasses must be put in designated containers).
Make sure to check the rules and regulations for fishing on the Naples Pier as they are subject to change. Be sure to send pictures of your catch CompleteFloridaFishing.com and we will include them on our site. We hope to hear from you soon!
