In Florida, you’re bound to see grouper on the menu. This fish is popular in the Sunshine State. It is a delicious-tasting fish, mild and can be paired with nearly anything! It is also easy to prepare. In the Gulf of Mexico, anglers head out and fish for grouper, but they aren’t the easiest fish to catch.
In the Gulf, there are several kinds of grouper that can be found, including: Gag, Black, Red, Scamp, Yellowfin, Yellowmouth, Rock Hind, Coney, Yellowedge, Warsaw, and snowy.

- Groupers are slow swimmers and can’t do long-distant swimming.
- These fish can change sex from female to male. If a male fish in a group dies, one female will turn into a male to replace him.
- Groupers can live up to 50 years out in the water.

- Grouper are known to live near rocky bottoms, reefs and drop off walks in deep water more than 60 feet in depth.
- The most commonly found groupers are the gag and red grouper.
- The yellowfin grouper has been known to be associated with ciguatera poisoning.
- Red groupers can live up to 25 years; the largest one ever caught in Florida was 42 pounds and 3 ounces.
- A grouper’s markings on its body can change to the environment around it.
- Groupers mainly feed on squid, small fish, octopus, and crustaceans.
- Groupers have stout bodies, but large mouths and strong gill muscles.
