In Florida, snook a is popular fish to catch. In fact, there are five different species of snook that inhabit the Florida waters. They are: tarpon snook, swordspine snook , large-scale fat snook, small-scale fat snook, and common snook. Snook are great for catching between March and October in the waters of Southwest Florida.   • Snook prefer warmer waters (they cannot live in water below 60 degrees F), but can also be found in fresh water.
  • These fish can change sex from male to female.
  • To catch their prey, they conduct surprise attacks. They usually hide behind rocks and other structures before they attack.
  • Snook eat shrimp, crabs, and mollusks.
  • They are known to put up a pretty good fight on the fishing line, which is a big reason why fisherman love going after them.
  • The Florida state record caught was 44 pounds, 3 ounces back in 1984.
  • Bag limit is 1 per day. The snook needs to be between 28 and 33 “ in size to catch.
  • Snook can often be found around mangroves, seawalls, bridges, reefs, pilings, and brackish waters.
  • Snook have a prominent lateral dark line down the side of their body. They have a large mouth, a high dorsal fine, sloping forehead, and a yellow pelvic fin.
  • Commercial harvesting of snook isn’t allowed in Florida.
  • Snook can grow to more than 47 inches in length.
